Warren Buffett, one of the richest men on Earth is a business magnate and he is the CEO and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, an American multinational conglomerate holding company that wholly owns GEICO, Dairy Queen, Lubrizol, Pampered Chef, NetJets, BNSF Railway, and more. Berkshire Hathaway is known for its control and leadership under Warren Buffett, the billionaire stock investor.
Buffett gets a salary for being the CEO for $100,000 per year with no stock options, which is among the lowest salaries for CEOs of large companies in the US. Not only that, Berkshire Hathaway currently the seventh largest company in the S&P 500 Index by market capitalization, and is having the most expensive share price in history with a Class A share costing more than $250,000 each, having never been split. The question is that how did Warren Buffett able to manage such an extraordinary company that outperformed others and at the same time, manages so many companies across different industries?
Well, Buffett did spill a little of his secret on how he form habits to make people attracted to him during an interview on The India Story.
Everyone knows that in order to manage a large conglomerate of corporate businesses, one need to possess outstanding leadership and people skills. And Buffett is famous for his tremendous personal relationship with a lot of the key people in his organization.
According to Buffett, there are people who you will like and people who will turn you off, the key to making people attracted to you is to choose to become the person you admire. Think about it, when people like you personalities and your qualities, they are willing to do more for you than for themselves. In the interview, Buffett also mentioned his good friend, Thomas Murphy and what he has learned from Tom. Tom is an American broadcast executive and the CEO of Capital Cities. He and Daniel Burke went on to acquire American Broadcast Company for $3.5 billion in 1986.
Buffett says every time when he was around Tom Murphy, he would think how he can help Tom because Buffett felt deeply that Tom has helped him a lot. Buffett went on to explain that this does not only happen to him. In fact, most people who are around Tom would feel that they are indebted and wanted to help Tom as much as possible. This is what makes Buffett so interested in learning from Tom.
When people love you and are attracted to you, they are willing to help you and do what you ask them to do. And this is extremely important when it comes to managing, dealing, and networking with people. Furthermore, to build a successful business, you need to become an extraordinary leader like Buffett to understand about your team and the people in your organization.
Warren Buffett’s Secret to Getting People to Like You
“Write down the qualities that you like and want to develop. Think about your five best friends, and write down why you like them. And then make those qualities your own.” This is the suggestion from the billionaire on how to make people attracted to you and like you.
Buffett also says that there is no quality that you cannot develop on yourself. The first key is to identify the qualities that you want to own. And the best way to start is to do the searching from your friends. So ask yourself, what qualities you want to build from your best friends? Identify five of them and start from there.
When you become likable and people love to be around you, you will get the best out of people. Of course, you should not shortchange or cheat anyone in life. Buffett also has a famous quote, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” This is why people love to work and get around Buffett. He has developed good qualities that people love and will never shortchange anyone for his own benefit.
Benjamin Graham, the mentor for Warren Buffett used this technique to grow a likable personality too. According to Buffett, when Ben Graham was young, he would write down the qualities from his best friends that he would like to develop, and then try to make those qualities his own. And this is what makes people love about Ben Graham. Buffett learned this and used this technique as well.
The takeaway is that you can choose who you want to be. You can choose to develop the qualities that you want to take in as your own. And that means you can choose to make yourself a better person who has qualities that people love, or you can choose to make yourself someone people hate to be around with. And if your goal is to build a multi-million dollar business, you have to choose great qualities so that people will want to help you achieve your goal.
